As mentioned in yesterday’s post – rainy weather + paper products = not ideal conditions for commerce.

Bands Make Her Dance – Days 01 & 02 {0}
As in years passed – the Doublenauts and I packed up and headed off to Chicago for the Flatstock poster show / Pitchfork Music Festival. This year the boys brought along Ross who is a very talented young designer from Ottawa who is spending the summer in Toronto working with the guys at 132 Oss.

Our Work Is Never Over {4}
I spent another super fun and super draining weekend in Chicago with the Doublenauts for the Flatstock poster show / Pitchfork Music Festival (more on that soon) but before I left I dropped my moto off at Solid Cycles (aka Frank The Tank) so he could install that Black Beauty I’d been lusting after for so long.

I was going to do it myself… I’d installed done a fair bit of electrical on my last bike (including signals / tail light) and, I think, got pretty good at it but the modern electrical seemed much more complicated… I was right. There is a little electrical junction hidden inside the tail light that ties the signals to the main wiring harness so Frank had to make a few additional wiring harnesses to tie them all back together… Throw in a fender chop and I’m happy to have paid a pro to take care of, in a few hours, what would have easily taken me all day to figure out… If not longer.

We Noticed {1}
You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice has been a pretty regular read of mine for many years, it makes me feel super cool when I’m out being social and someone says how much they like “so and so” which gives me the opportunity to be all “yeah, they totally ripped that off” which makes them go all “oh, you’re so cool, Matt, how’d you get to be so cool?” and I’m like “I dunno, man, just born super cool I guess…”
Anyway, if you’ve spent any time around me since the shirts (& patches) were released (July 20, 2011 – I know that because we picked them up on the way to Chicago last year) you’ll undoubtedly recognize the symbol on the left as designed by the buds at Doublenaut…

…if you frequent unoriginal, garbage retailers like ASOS then you might recognize the obviously poached-then-made-shittier symbol on the right.

Sure, it was probably some junior designer at ASOS that just saw the image on ffffound and thought “that’d make a cool shirt” so they changed it a little while making it worse (as my man Ben said “the crown is next level”) and put it in a black box on a white shirt (what?) and submitted it for production…
It might not even be “the company’s fault” as the higher-ups may not have even known… That said, they profited from the hard work of two very talented designers (and probably many more in the past and present) and for that… it’s official… and it’s been a while since once of these has been given… but… ASOS gets The Gas Face!

Origin Of Species {0}

Got a package in the mail today from Delicious Design League who’d sold out of their Origin Of Species at Flatstock in Chicago so I had them send me some for Alistair, William & Holden… and little baby Matty, of course.

I Go To Work – Day 05 {0}
We got up, packed up, hit J Crew, secured our spots in hell…

…got some more cigars…

Stuffed our faces, yet again…

…and got the fuck outta dodge!

What is in his shirt? Dog? Baby? Sandwich? Vote!

I saw a Dick that needed a little Tation!

Oh, you guys are fucked! I wish I coulda gottan a picture of Calvin pissing on Obama on the back…

I didn’t come home with as much as I thought I might, but a good haul none the less courtesy of The Chicago Diner, The Bubble Process, Aesthetic Apparatus, Lure Design and of course Doublenaut.

Thanks to Rez, Sean, Karen, Matt, Joe, Billy, Jason, Sarah & Jenny for a stellar weekend and of course to two of my very best buds Matt & Andrew for taking me with you… Until next year.

I Go To Work – Day 04 {0}
The boys and I were in reasonably decent shape the next day but it was clear almost immediately that we weren’t going to be drinking very many of the 36 beers we brought with us that day.
Andrew McNappin’

Guess who had no problems?

Just building new weaponry to launch things at Lil Tuffy, across the way…

I’d like to interrupt this post to bring you some essential Jonah Takalua moments…
Back to your regularly scheduled programming… If you didn’t watch that, you won’t get this next picture and you’re probably don’t like jokes.

I hadn’t spent enough time over the weekend checking out all of the amazing designers at the show so on the last day I did a proper tour and started to put together a short list of things to take home with me…

I got a few of these Darwin prints from Delicious for Holden, Alistair and William but they were sold out by that day so they’re going to send them to me. Tops!

I got a couple of Aesthetic Apparatus prints that are pretty rad, but my big score from them was the “Nice Beer Lake” beer tumbler set – last one in existence!

Chicago Soy Dairy was in full effect with their Temptation Ice Cream again - I ate fewer than expected which is good for my gut, but that shit was so good I wish I’d eaten a billion cones.

TV On The Radio was awesome… Check out how good my view was!

Joe D’s hula girl friend was there just shreddin’ it…

Got back to the booth close to the end of the set and started to help tear down…

We were all pretty hot & sticky at this point…

Matt made the #1 Fan to keep cool…

Why don’t you watch MTV for once?!

Guess who is still goin’ like a champ?

Goodbye, Flatstock…

We hit up the Twisted Spoke on the way back to the hotel which was pretty sweet…

So much to choose from!

Do you want the COCK SMASHER or…

…maybe the Gutter Slut?

Either way, the place was pretty awesome and the food/drinks were great. Andrew couldn’t finish his… I had to finish it so they wouldn’t think we didn’t like it.

–
While we were at the Twisted Spoke, in a move that would prove for lots of lolz at my expense for the next two days, I shazam’d the song playing and found a new band that I’ve been diggin’ on pretty hard since being back…

I Go To Work – Day 03 {0}
Conked out the night before from a long day of sun & suds so we got up, well rested and got to gittin’.

Call me Spongebob, stackin’ Krabby Patties, bitch I go to work! Do my CatDaddy…

On this day we would meet Joe D, who would prove to be a legitimately hilarious bro who never once failed to bring the LOLZ all weekend long…

Oh, and we’d drink margaritas to get the day going.

R Kelly approved.

Billy from Delicious Design League, along with his business partner Jason’s son was in the house.

Matt Kelly was in the house.

Cold Cave was in the house, surprisingly upbeat and wearing black leather while it was hot as fuck out. Dark Wave don’t wear t-shirts, son!

Speaking of inappropriate articles of clothing, Joe D dons the dogsuit and shit gets real from here on in.

Keith Morris was in the house.

The best “missed connection” you’ve ever seen, I swear. The non-plssed fella in the yellow shirt was stalled in that spot long enough to come and buy a print. Sick!

As the show let out we pumped the soul jams, had a little dance party and Joe D made sure that hands got slapped and stick-in-the-muds got put on notice!

Still love those Chicago train bridges…

Still love this beat up little 450…

Still stackin’ crabby patties…

Basically, we got the worst room in an otherwise swanky hotel which also happened to be a smoking room… When in Rome…

…get sexy.

–
Oh, you thought that was it? Nah son! We dos it big in Chi City! DJ Khalid! Reeeeeeeeemix! We Da Best!
We headed over to this rad bar called Alice’s that serves up the brewskis all night long… And some seriously awesome Karaoke jams! We met up with our Bubble Buddies along with Karen, Matt, Joe D (still in dog suit) and Jenny & Sarah from Lure Design and we all proceeded to basically run tings all night long

What the fuck?

I repeat…

Aner and I served up a little Ginuwine xxxtra spicy!

Sick sunnies approved!

–
I’d wager to say Aner & I do it better…
Any of those in attendance that may be reading, can you confirm?

I Go To Work – Day 02 {0}
As we did two years ago, the Brothers McCracken and I headed to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival and the American Poster Institute‘s associated Flatstock poster show.

The boys went to the show earlier to set up and I set out to The Chicago Diner for a vegan montecristo, some hash browns & a side of mac n cheese. Jesus Christ!

I still had some time to kill before I’d be able to get in officially so I just started walking in the direction of the festival… Did that for about an hour and a half before it got to be too hot and I found myself in a bit of a no-man’s land so I opted to flag down the first cab I saw (took almost half an hour!) and got the fuck outta there!

Went and got a flat of Bud and some ice for the cooler, met up with Andrew and settled in for a long day of drankin’ and slangin’ wares.

Last year, the boys shared their tent with the fellas from The Bubble Process out of Cleveland & Brooklyn and they’d already foretold of the good times we were sure to have with these dudes (and their bud Karen who was in from Florida) – I was not disappointed… I could tell within 5 minutes that this was going to be a super fun weekend with some super fun new buds.

Lil Tuffy in the house.

At these things, we don’t really watch many of the bands… The truth is, unless you’re going to get right up there, there isn’t much point in trying to watch… You can just watch on the big-screen in which case you could just stream it at home… I just like to go for the atmosphere, the hang-time and the occasional jam.

On day one we caught a couple of Neko Case before returning to home base for… you guessed it… buds & buds.

As per usual… Of the many food vendors at the festival, one of them is the aforementioned and afore-gushed-about Chicago Diner. Corn dogs and Cheese steaks for days, son!

This guy had a hat set-up to record bands. Apparently the sound wasn’t very good. Big win.

I forget this fella’s name, but he was one of the other designers that the boys knew… I liked his shirt which is apparently made by Miles To Go Clothing and is an homage to The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury… Their Moby Dick shirt is pretty sweet, too.

Yvonne: Badass

Matt: Think so? Just wait…

Matt: There he is…

Yvonne: That’s sweet…

Matt: Think so? Just wait…

Matt: There he is…

3 Seconds Of Careless Parking – $16,000 Damage. {4}

I’m just glad that I was in Chicago because if I weren’t my baby would have been parked right next to Yan’s, and subsequently laying underneath it.
RIP, Buddy.

Only You {1}

My man Teddy P (not THAT Teddy P) was kind enough to lend me his GF-1 for my weekend in Chicago with The Doublenauts for Pitchfork / Flatstock 2011 – (Last time I went along was 2009) and I figured I’d want more than my iPhone for the trip. It takes lovely photographs and I’m stoked… Thanks Ted!

My Car Goes… Chicago
Every Weekend To Pick Up Some Cargo {1}
Five days in Chicago for work… Not too much to say – early mornings, long / stressful days and long / super fun nights, great food and some great co-workers that I’m very proud to call friends.
Day 01

Day 02

Day 03

Day 04

Day 05

Oh yeah… and fuck the union. I mean, I love and fully support the idea of unions forming to protect workers from being taken advantage of in developing nations but the bloated, lazy and all-to-powerful American trade unions can go fuck themselves… That is all.

Dirty Work {1}
It was announced late last week that in the near future, one of my favorite local spots, Oddfellows would be be closing. I went there for a friend’s birthday on Friday night and I found out that the end is nigh. Next Saturday night, Oddfellows will close it’s doors for good.
I’ve had a lot of really good times there and I’m sad to see it go – that said, at least the same folks have Parts & Labour now and have another, larger, spot in the works. Just the same, I’ll pour a little liquor on the concrete for the place we’ve all loved since day one.
Beyond the food, of course, the real draw to places like Oddfellows and Parts & Labour lies in the environments that have been carefully crafted by part owners / design team Brian Richer and Kei Ng of Castor.
They’ve been getting a lot of press lately (Azure, MocoLoco, etc., etc.) and rightly so; their work is both rugged and refined and filled with clever little touches that you don’t always notice right away, but once you spot them they’re all you see. Couple that all with the fact that a lot of things are made from found or reclaimed/recycled materials and it’s all waaaaay up my alley.
I don’t know Kei at all but I’ve gotten to know Brian a little bit over the last little while and he’s such a solid dude; honest, hard-working, generous and straight forward – I’ve always gotten a real no-bullshit vibe from him and it shows in the work…
Here are a bunch of photos of their work, taken mostly from the West Side Studio blog and shot by Derek Shapton. Enjoy.
